Quick answer: Reddit told investors on October 29, 2026 that its Google search referral traffic fell meaningfully in Q3, and its CEO tied the drop to AI Mode and AI Overviews. My take: the real lesson isn’t about Reddit. Any business that relies on one search funnel for discovery is renting its growth, and AI answers just raised the rent.
Key takeaways
- In its Q3 2026 shareholder letter, Reddit said search referral traffic was down meaningfully, with the decline speeding up late in the quarter and continuing into October.
- Reddit said October search traffic dropped by more than 1 million referrals a week on average, and warned that daily users could fall by a low-double-digit percentage in Q4.
- Revenue still grew 53% year over year to $895 million, yet Reuters reported the shares fell 29% on October 30, their biggest single-day drop.
- My opinion: if a site Google once pushed to the top of so many results can lose this much search traffic this fast, no practice or agency should treat Google as a channel it owns.
- The fix isn’t to quit SEO. It is to turn search visitors into people who come back by name, and to stop judging success on a single traffic chart.
What did Reddit actually say about its Google traffic?
Reddit said in its Q3 2026 letter to shareholders, published with its results on October 29, 2026, that search referral traffic was down meaningfully in the quarter, that the decline accelerated later in the quarter, and that it continued into early Q4. The biggest impact was on logged-out visitors and web traffic.
The letter doesn’t name Google, but its wording is direct. It says: “Our search referral traffic was down meaningfully in Q3, with the decline accelerating later in the quarter.” It adds that during October, search traffic dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week, and that if current trends hold, total daily active uniques could fall in Q4 by a low-double-digit percentage from its base of about 130 million.
CEO Steve Huffman was more specific in an interview with CNBC. He said search referral traffic was “down meaningfully in this quarter” and linked it to the “shift to AI mode and AI overviews.” He also described it as “a fundamental shift in how the Google product works,” and contrasted it with earlier Google algorithm changes, which he said would “kind of come and go.”
Here are the main numbers from Reddit’s own Q3 2026 results release and shareholder letter:
| Measure (Q3 2026) | What Reddit reported | Change from a year earlier |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $895 million | Up 53% |
| Daily active uniques (global) | 130.3 million | Up 12% |
| Daily active uniques (US) | 50.7 million | Down 2% |
| Logged-out daily active uniques (US) | 27.3 million | Down 4% |
| Search referrals in October | Down more than 1 million a week on average | Stated in the shareholder letter |
| Q4 outlook for daily users | Could fall by a low-double-digit percentage | If current trends continue |
What is a search referral, and why does Reddit’s matter so much?
A search referral is a visit that arrives from a search engine, usually Google, rather than from someone typing the address or opening an app. Reddit’s referrals matter because so many logged-out visitors land on threads from search results, and some of them later become regular, logged-in users.
Reddit’s letter makes that link itself. It says some of the impact flows through to logged-in and app traffic, because search referral is a common way users re-engage. In other words, Google wasn’t only sending one-off readers. It was the top of Reddit’s funnel for finding new regulars, too.
That is the same role Google plays for most dental practices and most agencies. A patient searches, finds you, books, and only then becomes someone who comes back to you directly.
Why did Reddit’s stock fall when its revenue grew?
Reddit’s stock fell because investors care more about where users will come from next year than about one strong quarter. Revenue grew 53%, but US daily users fell, search referrals were shrinking every week in October, and the company warned that daily users could drop in Q4. Revenue guidance for Q4 also came in below expectations.
Reports differ on the size of the drop, depending on when they measured it. CNBC reported the shares fell more than 15% after the results came out on October 29. Reuters reported that Reddit shares tumbled 29% on Friday, October 30, their biggest single-day drop. Search Engine Roundtable put the fall at 33% in its November 2 headline.
The stock price isn’t the point for anyone reading this. What matters is that a company with growing revenue lost about a third of its market value in days, mostly because a single traffic source started to dry up.
What do I think Reddit’s falling Google traffic really means?
I think Reddit’s falling Google traffic means search is turning into a place where people get answers, not a place that hands out visits. Reddit’s own letter says web search is becoming “an AI-powered destination itself.” When that happens, any business whose discovery depends on one funnel is exposed, however big or trusted it is.

Here is the opinion I’ll stand behind: Google is a channel you rent, not one you own, and AI answers have made that rent unpredictable. The businesses that hold up best are the ones people already look for by name.
Look at what Reddit is doing about it. Its letter says the company is focused on logged-in and app users, calls them its most valuable users, and says a key piece of work is shifting Reddit to a logged-in-only experience. CNBC reported that Reddit will start testing a login requirement outside the US in Q4. That is a company trying to turn rented visitors into a relationship it controls.
I wasn’t the only one who read it that way. On X, Nic summed up the risk in one line:
“That’s what happens when you rely on a single funnel for discovery.”

I agree with that, and I’d add one thing. Reddit is about as strong a brand as exists in search. If its search traffic can drop this quickly, a dental practice or a small agency with far less brand demand has even less cushion.
Is this only about AI answers, or is Google ranking Reddit differently too?
It is probably both, and that matters for how you read the news. Huffman blamed AI Mode and AI Overviews, but Google says Reddit gets no special preference in rankings, and some Reddit pages lost visibility in recent core and spam updates. AI answers are a big part of the story, not all of it.
Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz pointed out that Glenn Gabe has documented how Reddit’s AI-translated pages took a big hit in the May 2026 core update and the June spam update. In August 2026, a Google spokesperson told The Verge that Reddit “gets no special preference” in Google’s ranking systems.
Google also disputes the wider idea that AI is draining the web. In August 2025, Google’s head of Search, Liz Reid, wrote that total organic click volume from Google Search to websites had been “relatively stable year-over-year”. That was a year before Reddit’s warning, and it is an average across the whole web, but it is a fair counterweight.
Here is the fair version of the other side, as I see it:
- Reddit is unusual. Reddit gained a lot of visibility in Google over the past few years, so it had more to lose when that visibility changed.
- Ranking changes are part of it. Losing machine-translated pages in core and spam updates is not the same thing as AI answers taking clicks.
- Local searches behave differently. Someone looking for a dentist still needs a name, a map listing and a phone number.
I accept all three. None of them changes my conclusion. Whether the cause is an AI answer or a ranking update, the risk is the same: one company’s decisions can cut your traffic, and you don’t get a vote.
What does Reddit’s Google traffic drop mean for practice owners and agency owners?
For practice owners, it means organic Google traffic can fall for reasons that have nothing to do with how good your practice is. For agency owners, it means traffic-only reports are getting harder to defend. Both groups should measure calls, bookings and returning visitors, and build demand that doesn’t depend on one results page.
What does it mean for dental practice owners?
For dental practice owners, it means informational traffic is the most exposed, and local, ready-to-book searches are less so. The searches AI answers handle well are the general questions. The searches that fill chairs still end with a practice name, a Google Business Profile and a phone call.
I’ve argued before that most patients searching for a dentist never click a single result anymore. Reddit’s numbers are the same trend showing up in a public company’s filings. The practical answer is to make sure that when a patient does find you, they remember your name, save your number and come back for their next visit without searching again.
What does it mean for agency owners?
For agency owners, it means a client can lose search traffic even when your work is sound, because Google itself changed. If your reports lead with sessions and rankings, a drop like Reddit’s looks like your fault. If they lead with leads, calls and bookings, you can show what the traffic was actually worth.
I’d also be careful about selling traffic growth as the goal. In my take on Google putting AI Mode on the normal results page, I said Google keeps moving searchers toward AI answers. Reddit’s quarter is what that looks like on a balance sheet.
What would I do now if I ran a practice or an agency?
If I ran a practice or an agency, I wouldn’t cut SEO spend because of Reddit. I would treat search as the way new people find me, then work hard to turn each visitor into a relationship I own: a saved contact, an email list, a returning patient or client, and a name people search for directly.

- Measure outcomes by source. Track calls, forms and bookings, and split new patients or clients by where they came from. A traffic chart on its own can’t tell you if a drop actually cost you anything.
- Grow branded demand. Watch how many people search for your practice or agency by name. That number is the clearest sign of demand you own, and it holds up better when general searches move into AI answers.
- Give visitors a reason to return directly. For a practice, that means recall reminders, an easy way to rebook and a complete Google Business Profile. For an agency, it means a newsletter or useful reports clients actually read.
- Make your pages worth citing. When AI answers do mention a business, they pull from clear, specific pages. A thin page gives an AI answer no reason to name you.
- Add a second and third discovery channel. Referrals, reviews, local partnerships and email all bring people in without going through one results page.
I made a similar argument in my post on word of mouth losing ground to Google. The point there was that Google matters more than ever for discovery. Reddit’s quarter is the other half of that story: because it matters so much, it shouldn’t be the only door.
How can you tell if your business relies on a single search funnel?
You can tell your business relies on a single search funnel if most new patients or clients arrive through organic Google search, few people search for you by name, you have no way to contact past visitors directly, and your reports only track traffic. If two or more of those are true, you carry the same risk Reddit just reported.

Here is how I’d compare a business that depends on one funnel with one that has spread its risk:
| Factor | Single search funnel | Spread discovery |
|---|---|---|
| Where new people come from | Mostly organic Google search | Search, Google Business Profile, referrals, reviews and email |
| Brand demand | Few searches for the business by name | Steady or growing searches by name |
| Contact with past visitors | None once they leave | Recall lists, newsletters or saved contacts |
| What gets reported | Sessions and rankings | Calls, bookings and new patients or clients by source |
| Impact of a Google change | Sudden and hard to explain | Noticeable, but absorbed by other channels |
Frequently asked questions
Why is Reddit’s Google traffic falling?
Reddit says its search referral traffic fell meaningfully in Q3 2026, and CEO Steve Huffman linked the drop to the shift to AI Mode and AI Overviews. Ranking changes may also have played a part: Search Engine Roundtable notes that Reddit’s AI-translated pages lost visibility in Google’s May 2026 core update and June spam update.
How much did Reddit’s stock drop?
Reports differ depending on when they measured. CNBC said shares fell more than 15% right after the October 29, 2026 results. Reuters reported a 29% fall on October 30, Reddit’s biggest single-day drop. Search Engine Roundtable’s November 2 headline put the decline at 33%.
Will AI Overviews hurt my dental practice’s traffic the same way?
Not in the same way. Reddit’s traffic leaned heavily on general questions, which AI answers handle well. A dental practice gets most of its bookings from local, ready-to-book searches, where patients still need a practice name, a map listing and a phone number. General informational pages are the most exposed.
Should I stop investing in SEO because of this?
No. Search is still how most new patients and clients find a business for the first time. The lesson is to stop relying on search alone: measure bookings by source, grow the number of people who search for you by name, and give every visitor a reason to come back directly.
What is a search referral?
A search referral is a visit that arrives from a search engine results page, such as Google, instead of from someone typing your web address, opening an app or clicking a link in an email. Search referrals show how much of your traffic depends on a search engine deciding to send people to you.
My bottom line on Reddit’s falling Google traffic
Reddit’s quarter is the clearest public evidence yet that AI answers can pull traffic away from even the strongest sites, and fast. I don’t read it as a reason to give up on search. I read it as a reason to stop treating search as the whole plan. Use Google to be found, then make sure people come back to you by name.
That is how I approach dental SEO for practices: visibility in Google and its AI answers, judged by the patients it brings in. If you want the practical side, Dental Master Media has a guide on getting your dental practice cited inside AI Overviews, not just ranked. You can read more about my work on surajrana.com.
